The LibMed team condemns the immigration bill passed by the French Parliament on December 19, 2023. It is a shame.
LibMed is an international team of researchers working on medieval Libya. The new French law on immigration (19/12/2023) poses a number of scientific threats.
The matter of quantity. Quotas imposed by the new text imply restrictions for students and colleagues. Basically, our activities depend on free circulation. We are already facing problems with visa issuance (heavy and complex procedures), which impede the visit of foreign academics. The situation is seriously worsening.
The matter of quality. Non-EU citizens will not be granted the same rights as their EU counterparts. They shall pay much higher fees — over 3,000 € against 200-300 € — and disburse a deposit before their entry in France, the amount being retrieved only after they return back home. This is unacceptable, especially for people coming from poorer countries.
The matter of ethics. The despicable ideology at the core of this political act sees non-nationals as a problem. Our experience is exactly the opposite: we learn and progress through mutual cooperation. Foreigners are the solution.
LibMed is not giving up: we will open new doors.
